OpenBritain

I have recently started consulting for a new website due to be launched at the start of September which is will provide tourist and daily living information for people with disabilities and seniors in the UK called OpenBritain.

Although the site isn’t yet ready, my work with them has already begun to take me the length and bredth of the country and has allowed me to do a few blog posts for them including a review of the Equal Adventure Festival 09 in Aviemore, Scotland and the Caledonian Sleeper train to London.

Join the Adaptive Sports Center for three days of adaptive sit down cycling and handcycling in the scenic Elk Mountains this August! Participants will enjoy one day each of off-road cross-country mountain biking on One-Off Handcycles, downhill mountain biking on 4-wheel gravity bikes and classic road touring on traditional handcycles, led by ASC’s experience guide staff. This new clinic is geared toward beginner and intermediate riders; all adaptive cycling equipment will be provided.

$690/ person with lodging and airport shuttle (includes two nights in the Grand Lodge on Mt. Crested Butte and one night of backcountry luxury camping); $480/ person without lodging and airport shuttle. Both options include: three days cycling (on road, off road and downhill mountain biking) one night of backcountry camping, three lunches, one dinner, one breakfast and activity transportation.

Cycling for People with Disabilities in Berekely

Cast your memory back to the age of 5 or 6, when your adult helper let go and you wobbled off on your first solo bicycle ride.

What was that incredible feeling?

Freedom.

But what if that freedom was never available to you?

A woman named Meida recently contacted the Adaptive Cycling Center at Berkeley’s Aquatic Park. The weathered wooden building is known to regulars as the BORP bike house, as in the Bay Area Outreach & Recreation Program. Meida explained that she was born without arms and wanted to ride a bike. She had ridden tandem but hoped to ride alone. She dreamed of someday riding across the Golden Gate Bridge.

Wheelchair Athlete’s Back Flip Lands Him in Record Book

With the top of his head mere inches above the lip of a jump, Aaron Fotheringham soars into the Guinness World Book of Records by performing a back flip in his wheelchair at Doc Romeo skate park on Saturday.

Aaron Fotheringham went into the record books as a pioneer in wheelchair sports Saturday.

Guinness World Records recorded the Northwest Las Vegas resident, in front of a crowd of more than 300 at Doc Romeo Park, as the first to complete a back flip in a wheelchair.

“It feels awesome to get this,” said Fotheringham, 16, who performed the flip before the Vegas AmJam skatepark competition.

Ashoka Changemakers Challenge Winners Announced

The Ashoka National Geographic Changemakers Challenge winners were announced yesterday. Unfortunately, AccessibleNicaragua didn’t make it into the finalists and even more disappointing is that none of the inclusive travel for people with disabilities entries did either. I guess that we have a long way to go in our particular sector and have a lot of work to do in the geotourism area.

One of the positive things is that one of the winners is Rios Tropicales a sustainable adventure tourism company in Costa Rica. It just so happens that I’m going to Costa Rica this Friday and I’ll be meeting up with Rafael Gallo one of the founders of the company. I hope that we can discuss how Rio Tropicales can improve facilities and services people with disabilities so that there is more inclusive tourism available in Central America.

I’ll be blogging the trip, so look out for the posts in the coming week.

The Ben Nevis Challenge

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

I thought I would write to you once more to let you know that I have completed the Ben Nevis Challenge. It was an amazing climb and we managed to get to the summit in just over eight hours even after losing a team mate to illness and getting a puncture! This meant we only just got to the top and had time to take a couple of photos before we had to turn back so we didnt run out of daylight.

Socorro, Brazil - Universal Design and Inclusive Adventure Sports

As part of the trip to Sao Paulo for ReaTech a group of us went on an excursion to Socorro, organised by Nunes Joedson and Ricardo Shimosakai of Turismo Adaptado. The group consisting of Scott Rains (Rolling Rains Report), Jani Nayar (SATH), Nélida Barbeito (TTS Viajes), Bruna Castro and myself went to see the project in Socorro to implement a basic standard for people with disabilities throughout the town including adventure sports. We first went to Portal do Sol, a hotel that has several rooms adapted for people with disabilities.

After which we then went to Parque dos Sonhos where they offer a whole host of adventure sports for people with disabilities, we tried a 1KM long zip wire that reaches speeds of over 50 KMPH. A great experience, and although not 100% suitable for everyone, a fantastic example of Inclusive Adventure Sports.
