Affordable Art Fair, London

The Affordable Art Fair (AAF) is the place to discover and buy paintings, drawings, sculpture, photography and original prints – all priced between £50 and £3,000.

With 120 carefully selected galleries from across the UK and Europe exhibiting there is contemporary art on show to suit every taste and budget.

The forthcoming Autumn Collection (22 – 25 October) in Battersea Park, London, marks AAF’s 10th anniversary.

I contacted the Affordable Art Fair to find out about facilities for people with disabilities and they responded very quickly with the following information:

“The Affordable Art Fair is located in a fully wheelchair accessible marquee, with the fair itself designed with wide aisles to make moving around the event easy for wheelchair users. We also have several wheelchairs which can be booked, for free on site, to use within the fair for those less able to walk.

We have a disabled toilet in the entrance marquee and special parking spaces at the entrance for cars displaying disabled stickers.

All of our signage is clearly laid out, using large point size to assist those with visual impairments.

A number of art fair assistants are employed and they are always on hand to give assistance to any visitors who may need it.

Coastal Currents

The Coastal Currents Arts Festival was launched over a week ago on the 29th August in Hastings, Rye and Bexhill-on-Sea, but don’t panic the event continues until the 30th September so there’s still plenty of time to get there.

“Coastal Currents 2009 promises to be an exciting and accessible event for both residents and visitors to the area with a wide range of free events including film, performances, music, talks, guided walks and workshops. There are also events designed for specialists – a programme of talks and presentations by artists and curators from the South East and London while a screening of artists’ short films will feature work from emerging and well established artists.”

Somerset Art Works Exhibitions

This evening the Somerset Art Works (SAW) exhibtion launch will be held from 4.30 - 8.00pm at the Langport Town Hall and Gardens, Somerset. SAW is a non-profit making organisation promoting the Visual Arts and creating opportunities for Visual Artists and Makers in Somerset through advocacy, promotion and development.

The main part of the SAW exhibition is Art for Everyone that will run from the 19th September - 4th October throughout the region at different venues. The SAW website lists all the venues and also provides some information regarding access for wheelchair users. You can also search the different activities by using their interactive map, by artist name, and art form.

Pestival

Southbank Centre 4th - 6th September 2009

Celebrating insects in art, and the art of being an insect.

Pestival is a rare creature: an international, inter-disciplinary, community-led festival. Events include insect-inspired comedy, music, ID walks, talks, workshops, experiments, fashion and a termite inspired architectural structure at the centre of Pestival 2009. 80% of creatures on earth are insects, the ‘pests’ without whom humans wouldn’t survive. Pestival celebrates the 100s of millions of years of evolution, which places insects at the heart of human existence. Pestival 2009 celebrates how insects shape our world, and how humans shape the world of insects, in both science and the arts.

Pestival is in its second edition and has been described as “a rare and wonderful celebration of the creepy crawly” (The Independent). Swarm on the entire Southbank Centre site, 4 - 6 September and put insects on the cultural map - before it’s too late.

Noticias desde Barcelona (News from Barcelona)

Esta semana en Barcelona hay la Avante Primera Salón Para Autonomía Personal Y la Calidad de Vida, 5 - 7 de junio en la Fira Barcelona. Aún que la lista de expositores parece un poco incompleto, puede ser que la feria esta interesante porque hay Turismo de Catalunya y Human Resources S.A. un empresa que recientamente han publicado su guía de Catalunya para discapacitados. This week in Barcelona is the Avante First Exhibition of Personal Independence and Quality of Life, 5th - 7th June at the Fira Barcelona. Even though the list of exhibitors seems tobe somewhat incomplete, it could be that the exhibition is interesting as attending are the Catalan Tourist Board and a company called Human Resources S.A. which recently published their access guide to Catalonia for people with disabilities. También hoy en Absolut BCN (enlace en castellano) han anunciado “Música als Parcs” (enlace en catala) del Ajunctament de Barcelona cual es música en directo en los parques de Barcelona y lo mayoria son accesibles para discapacitados (junio - agosto).

Also today Absolut BCN (link in Spanish) have announced “Música als Parcs” (link in Catalan) by the Barcelona City Council which is live music in the different parks around Barcelona, the majority of which are accessible for people with disabilities (from June - August).

ReaTech 2008, Sao Paulo, Brazil

ReaTeach is now over and I’m back in Nicaragua, here a few highlights of the exhibition:

One particular stand was a group of PwD’s that mouth and foot paint (Pintores Com a Boca e os Pés) that although I’ve seen this at other exhibitions it’s always great to see these guys doing what they do. On another stand there was “Movimento Superacao” a PwD reclaim the streets movement. This charity organise huge street parties to raise awareness about the fact that access needs to be improved in Sao Paulo for PwD’s. Their next street party is on the 6th December and this type of event is exactly what we need to raise awareness and get younger people involved….. Revolution through fun

The other obvious stands that were of interest to me were to do with Inclusive Adventure Tourism including Aventura Especial, offering inclusive adventure and ecotourism in Socorro, EcoAcao in Brotas and Juquitiba, Mao, na Borda and Escola de Surf do Pirata, offering surfing courses for PwD’s in Brazil. There was also a great stand for a company called Mog who build accessible jeeps, known as the Mog Rampa. These are just a few examples of some of the great projects that are happening in Brazil, I thoroughly encourage everyone to attend a local disability exhibition to see what is going on in their country.

Some of the international contacts that I met face to face for the first time include, Scott Rains the author of the Rolling Rains Report and a well respected pioneer of Inclusive Travel projects and studies, Jani Nayar from the Society of Accessible Tourism and Hospitality (SATH) and Nélida Barbeito from TTS Viajes (Argentina) that have a department that specialise in holidays for PwD’s.

More importantly than the international contacts, ReaTech had a small ranch where I got to meet some sheep! They also had horses where people with disabilities could try horseback riding.

For me, even though I’ve been to too many disability exhibitions in the UK, ReaTech was interesting to see facilities for PwD’s from a Brazilian and South American point of view.
