Bradford Music Week runs from the 21st - 27th September 2009 and the event will include a diverse range of music. There is also the World Mile Festival which is running as part of Bradford Music Week. This event will run over the weekend of 26th - 27th September in venues along the route of Ivegate to White Abbey Road.

The Swansea Festival of Music and Arts runs from the 28th Spetember - 17th October at various venues across the city. “The success of last year’s 60th birthday Festival has enabled us, in difficult economic circumstances, to build a programme of quality and diversity: concerts, opera, oratorio, chamber music, jazz and gospel, together with classical and contemporary dance, musical comedy, visual arts and lectures. We hope that people of all ages and backgrounds will share the colour and imagination which the arts bring to our lives.”

OK, so it’s not quite Glastonbury, but this weekend (4th - 6th September) the small town of Bingley, just outside Bradford, West Yorkshire, hosts it’s very own music festival (BML). The line up includes well known bands such as The Undertones, Doves, Editors and Calvin Harris as well as local bands that have competed for the right to play at BML.On the Essential Information page of the BML website they state:
“There is a viewing area for disabled people at the side of the event arena. Guide Dogs for the blind and/or deaf are the only animals allowed on the Festival site. Parking for disabled blue badge holders is available at Myrtle Park Primary School, Beech Street. (Follow signs) Please note: Disabled parking spaces are limited and are available on a first come first served basis.

After a long flight via Miami and London (review of great service from American Airlines to come) I’m eventually back in good old Barcelona in the neighbourhood where I used to live, Gracia. Yesterday I went for a wheel down to the beach and along the accessible promanade passing by the inclusive beaches, specifically San Sebastía, adapted by wooden ramps to the sea which are staffed by local Red Cross volunteers and where they also have a beach wheelchair.
After sunning myself for an hour or so and drinking a suprisingly expensive banana smoothie I headed back to Plaza Rius i Taulet, Gracia for the 18th Festival l’hora del Jazz (The Hour of Jazz). The plaza is totally accessible and the jazz from 12.00 - 15.00 hrs is totally free. The festival continues every Sunday throughout September (21st and 28th), so if you happen to be in Barcelona and like jazz it’s well worth checking out.
The nearest adapted metro station is Fontana on the Green Line (L3) and the nearest bus stops are on Gran de Gracia. You can find the bus numbers through the TMB website.

This week in Barcelona is the Avante First Exhibition of Personal Independence and Quality of Life, 5th - 7th June at the Fira Barcelona. Even though the list of exhibitors seems tobe somewhat incomplete, it could be that the exhibition is interesting as attending are the Catalan Tourist Board and a company called Human Resources S.A. which recently published their access guide to Catalonia for people with disabilities. También hoy en Absolut BCN (enlace en castellano) han anunciado “Música als Parcs” (enlace en catala) del Ajunctament de Barcelona cual es música en directo en los parques de Barcelona y lo mayoria son accesibles para discapacitados (junio - agosto).
Also today Absolut BCN (link in Spanish) have announced “Música als Parcs” (link in Catalan) by the Barcelona City Council which is live music in the different parks around Barcelona, the majority of which are accessible for people with disabilities (from June - August).
OK, so the first thing that I want to blog about is the fact that blogger.com have locked me out of my old blog! It keeps telling me that my password is wrong, which, it isn’t. So I’ve been through the whole process of trying to re-establish a new password which I simply can’t get to work and it keeps telling me the new password is wrong even though I’ve just re-established it and confirmed it. Grrrrrrrrr, technology…… Even when I set up a new blog with them, I still couldn’t log back inot it after I logged out.
Anyway, here’s a new start on a new blog with a new blog website, lets hope this one works better. I’ve been doing some looking around recently at different things on the internet and there is some criticism about my old blog: www.accessibleconsulting.blogspot.com because I haven’t written anything in over a year. Well I guess that that’s a fair enough comment and anyone that has ever looked at the blog has now long since gone, but I thought I’d give this another shot……

Primavera Sound
Antonia Font is a group from Majorca that have been around for a few years now. I’m not even going to pretend to be a music critic as that’s not my job but they’re one of those bands that you don’t really need to understand the lyrics in order to enjoy the music. This in itself is a great relief as they sing in Majorcan which is similar to Catalan. They play a variety of different styles and have both serious and silly lyrics including a song about a family of sharks that eat fishermen.

As I’ve just started this blog and just been to this music festival it seems like a good starting place. Primavera sound is an annual music festival in Barcelona and brings together the best of the old and new bands from across the world. That’s all well and good, but what about the access?
Until 2005 Primavera sound was held at Poble Espanyol at Montjuic where the majority of the Olympics were held in 1992. The biggest problem with this venue for disabled people was that it was situated on a large hill. There were many steps and so disabled people had to find routes which were barrier free. Not only that but to get to many of the smaller stages the only access for wheelchair users was via platform lifts to climb stairs. Most wheelchair users find this a hassle and at the least a tedious waste of time looking for a steward who inevitably doesn’t know how it works or doesn’t have the key.
